STUART HALL - RECEPTION THEORY

Stuart Hall's Reception theory states that we are as an audience are an ACTIVE audience which means we are actively engaged in the interpretation. The theory also states that even though one messages is sent out, not one understanding is made. The theory works on the basis of encoding and decoding.

  • Encoding : The producer creates a text with a meaning or a message.
  • Decoding: Is how the audience interpret the text.
The theory states that there are three audience types,

  • Dominant or preferred, this type of audience decode the encoded message of the text.
  • Negotiated, this type of audience partially agree with the encoded message however not fully.
  • Oppositional , this type of audience have a completely different interpretation to the encoded message.
The audience may have different interpretations due to several factors which may determine their understanding, these factors are: life experience, mood at the time of decoding, age, culture, beliefs and gender. However, by using codes and conventions genre can still be created.

In relation to my media text, when watching my music video the audience will be an active audience therefore their interpretation of my media text could possibly be totally different to my encoded message. A dominant audience would understand my encoded message however, a negotiated or oppositional audience may not, being aware of this make me worry as to what people may interpret from my music video. The encoded message shows how in society today, many things go on behind closed doors that peers may not view however still continue to judge others. Based on the original video of breezeblocks there is violence involved when a relationship falls apart in split seconds, this then shows how individuals act in a split second and the consequences of personalities with short fuses. However a negotiated audience may understand my message partially but not fully, along with an oppositional audience that may totally disagree with my message when decoded. This for me is a problem as I do not want any audience to think I am exploiting domestic violence in any way, my music video is based solely on the breezeblocks video as I feel it works effectively in reflecting the lyrics and the 'behind closed doors' aspect of real life.

PRODUCTION UPDATE

Unfortunately I was unable to film any part of my music video this weekend due to an unexpected family incident beyond anyones control. Due to this my Nan did not feel she was able to let me film in her house. I respected this decision and therefore have thought of other locations I could possibly film in the future. My male cast member offered his Kitchen to be used for filming if needs be, which I am grateful for as my kitchen is not big enough and due to my parents decorating the house, several health and safety issues would be apparent.

STORY BOARD

LOCATION CHANGE

Due to issues beyond no ones control I had to change my location, I am now filming in Lee's (male lead) kitchen rather than my Nans. This actually works to my advantage as I had a problem of wanting to smash plates but not being able to smash them indoors, however, because Lee's kitchen leads to both his front and back garden I can alter the shots to follow him - by a tracking shot-  into the garden where he will smash the plate.

PRODUCTION UPDATE

Filming Date: 16th & 17th November

Location: Nans Kitchen

Who can attend: Myself and Lee.
Nicole has other commitments all weekend.

I have booked a camera and tripod out from Ray - our media technician - and plan to film the bulk of my music video with the male cast member. The Kitchen scene appears significantly throughout in my planning and therefore by filming these scenes I can understand whether they are effective and hopefully can use some of them for my final music video.

How existing artists promote their material and how I would advertise my music video to promote it and get feedback.

Advertisement is key when producing a media product because if the product is not advertised to the audience then potentially they do not know of its existence. Exiting artists choose to promote their new material via the internet on sites such as Veevo and YouTube, others tend to promote their albums on the television with adverts. These adverts contain the product in direct form giving previews to certain songs on the album of can be the backing track to an advert form a different media product. A new way of advertising has become popular on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with artists giving previews and teasing their fans with new material.

Alt J's song Fitzpleasure is used to accompany a phone advertisement. This gets the song previewed to a mass audience and may fuel a wider audience to view their existing material. This way of advertisment allows the audience to seek the bands song in full and preview other existing songs and albums.

The Kooks chose to advertise their new album 'Konk' via the television with the main focus on their new popular single at the time of release. This appeals to a mass audience as the audience will preview the song and will create recognition with band and the album.

The Social Media is used frequently by artists as they can appeal directly to their fan bases on popular sites used frequntly by their audience such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Taking the material to the audience aids the promotion of upcoming releases and tour dates. Social Media sites are a great way of interaction between the artists and their fan base and allow the audience to feel apart of the bands journey through the music industry. The Social Media is a factor I will consider using to get feedback on my music video once it is created.

CAST MEMBERS

Nicole Dray - Main Female

Nicole is an ex Wyke College student, however, she is now attending a dance course. Having known Nicole for several years I am aware of her confidence and her ability to act and perform, because of this she will be an ideal cast memeber for my music video. Having suggested takeaway after filming finishes, she was willing to take part.

Lee Coyle - Main Male

Lee is a student outside of wyke college and has interest in the indie rock music genre. It is this reason as to why he would be a valuable member of my cast as I can relate to his other interests when choosing costume choices and iconography. He also was willing to take part in my music video when I suggested takeaway after filming.

COSTUME

I have chose this costume for the male as I want the audience to understand the narrative through the mise en scene via encoding. He appears to be sat in a suit type outfit which represents the fact that he is mourning over his ex girlfriend who is dead to him because of his actions but in reality she is not.

The kitchen scene appears as a flash back so stereotypical everyday clothing is used to create social realism with the audience. This also suggests that they are just two 'normal' people sitting down to breakfast and places both the characters in a different time line via costume. The branded clothing used fits with the iconography of indie rock as when assessing what other interests people who enjoy listening to the genre enjoy, fashion was one of the interests and brands such as Fred Perry, Adidas and Pretty Green were noted.

The running scene follows on from the kitchen scene therefore to create continuity between the two scenes and the different shots, the same costume is used. This also lets the audience know that they are still watching the flash back.

The bathroom scene also follows on from the running scene, the same costume creates continuity and sets the scene in the same timezone as the previous two scenes.
The theatre scene is in a different time zone and is possibly in the mind of the male character, because of this I chose to have the characters in the same costume, plain, all black to reflect the darkness of the situation and the feelings of the male.

The first scene is then returned too at the end of the music video, by this point the audience will have decoded the costume choices in my preferred way and will undertsand the narrative. To reinforce the costume choise I will have the male stood up and a long shot will be used to assess his costume.

FEMALE COSTUME IDEAS

After looking at existing music videos from the indie rock genre, I identified the type of costume choices worn by the females in them. Similar to the male costume choice, the females also wear casual clothing which create the social realism. Plain tops and trousers are used to create the costume, and the natural look of hair and makeup are used. These costume choices are very effective in creating continuity in the mise en scene and it is for this reason that I will use the found choices in my own work.

MALE COSTUME IDEAS

All of these artists or of the indie rock genre and all have a similar dress sense to one another that could potentially categories them as indie rock artists. Bands and artist such as Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, Miles Kane, The Wombats, Alt J and Oasis. After looking at their costume choices I have concluded that they tend to wear clothing of a casual nature such as jeans and a t shirt and when they do wear more formal clothes such as a suit, it is then dressed down by a checked shirt or plain t-shirt. The costume choice also allows a social realism to be created through the mise-en-scene.After researching what the indie rock artists tend to wear I now want to follow the idea of casual clothing through to the costume ideas form my characters. Also the chosen hair style, if not neat and short it is longish and scruffy to give the 'not bothered' attitude. This is also a feature I will create with my character.

HEALTH & SAFETY

When filming my music video there are several issues I will have to bare in mind in regards to health & safety to ensure both my cast and I are safe when filming.

1. Throwing of the plates and crockery could potentially cause injury to cast members and equipment therefore to prevent any injury's the crockery will not be thrown indoors. The crockery will be seen to be thrown by the male cast member but will not actually the hands of the male. The rest of the cast will be off set and with editing the scene will fit together to make it look like the crockery is being thrown indoors.

2. Running from room to room occurs in my storyboard therefore to prevent the risk of the cast members tripping over objects and injuring themselves I will ensure there are no objects lying around. I will also make sure the cast members have suitable shoes for running or have bare feet for extra grip. As I want to keep the social recognition in my media product having appropriate mise en scene in relation to costume having trainers would be an ideal choice.

3. As there is a sense of violence in my music video I do not want any harm to come to my cast members however I do want the happenings to look realistic. To diverge from any harm coming to them I will position the camera at certain angles to make it look like the events are really happening. Contact between the cast members will occur however force will not be used.

4. The wires of the equipment could be an issue both to myself and the cast members when
filming. To ensure there is no risk of tripping over the wires and injuring ourselves or breaking the equipment I will ensure the wires are behind scenes and the cast members are made aware of where the wires are so they avoid the areas.

5. When the female cast members head is dunked into the sink full of water I will make sure the water is luke warm, not too cold and not too warm, to avoid any discomfort coming to her. I will also make sure she leads the way in putting her head into the sink so no discomfort is caused by the males hands force on her head.

6. The lights in the theatre give off a great amount of heat therefore to ensure the cast members do not get uncomfortably hot I will keep a door open for ventilation. I will ensure all persons on set drink frequently so they are hydrated.

7. As the setting is in both my house and my nans house, the issue of other people walking in on filming and potentially not being aware of the wires is a hazard. I have made a sign to place onto the doors of the rooms in where we will be filming to let the other members of the household where we are filming and to take caution when coming on set in between breaks.

A First Aid box will be accessbile on set at all times.

LOCATIONS

College Theatre:
Ideal as I can change the lighting and the black curtains allow me to create the dark mood for Indie Rock.

Nan's Kitchen:
My nans kitchen is ideal to fit a tabel in as I want the main character of my narrative to be slumped over a table. As I want the music video to have social recognition it is vital I have locations that are familiar to the audience

My Bathroom:
My bathroom is an ideal size for me to capture the shots I want for my music video and also I can create the dark lighting for convetional effect.

My Garden:
As I want to capture plates and cutlery being thrown and smashing it would not be appropriate to do it indoors due to health & safety and the possible breakages of items in the house therefore I will film the plate and cutlery being thrown outside against my house wall. The wall of my house is white allowing me to be able to blend it into my music video with effects and dark lighting.

My Living room:
As I want a tracking shot of my cast running through a living room towards the bathroom my living room is needed to allow continuity in the mise-en-scene to link the shots.
